So Still the Night by Kim Lenox

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Immortals, People with Abilities, Shadow Guard
Sub Genre: Historical Romance
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Marcus Helios was a member of the Shadow Guard until one reckless act changed it all, bringing him to the edge of madness. His hope for salvation lies in a cryptic message contained within two cryptic scrolls he believes to be in the possession of an enigmatic beauty named Mina. And Mina is not about to hand over the scrolls’ secrets to a total stranger. But someone else has designs on the mysterious relics, and on Mark: Jack the Ripper’s jilted bride. Her malevolent embrace will trap everyone within reach, and her dark plans will challenge the powers of all she is destined to destroy.

This is the second book in the Shadow Guard series. After what Marcus went through to get Jack the Ripper he is waiting to see when the orders for his death will come. But then there is hope that may be able to save him. He must learn from Mina if she has the scrolls that will help save him. Mina isn’t sure what to make of Mark even though he does intrigue her. This is a great second book as it picks up right from the last one, just changing the main characters. Giving a more dynamic richer feel to the world that is created with this story. I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read the next one, Darker Than Night.

Darker Than Night by Kim Lenox

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Immortals, People with Abilities, Shadow Guard
Sub Genre: Historical Romance
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: The Shadow Guards – A mysterious order of immortals entrusted with the destiny of the living – have been called upon to reclaim the souls of the most wicked and depraved of earth’s mortals. Sleeping Beauty. Countess Selene is the Shadow Guard’s only female member. It has taken her centuries to prove herself worthy of the Order. She sacrificed herself to save the people of London, and she’s now under a sleeping spell in the Tower of London, guarded by Raven warriors. Dangerous Beauty. When Selene awakens on a dark street with a blade in her hand and a dead prostitute at her feet, everything changes. She loses her power and authority, and is held under surveillance by Lord Avenage, England’s Ravenmaster, a reclusive and seductive immortal warrior whose past is shrouded in secrets. But what they don’t realize is that evil is watching. Cut off from the protective ranks of their fellow Shadow Guards, Selene and Avenage find themselves face-to-face with an ancient enemy, with only each other to trust…

This is the third book in the Shadow Guard series. This is Selene and Avenage’s story. Selene has been asleep since the last book but when she wakes things don’t look good for her. Avenage has been watching Selene for years but now he thinks she may have killed one of his brothers. As the two work together they finally told each other how they feel for one another, but is that enough. This is a great addition to the series. It just builds from the last two books. I can’t wait to see where the series will go from here.

Not Quite a Husband by Sherry Thomas

Genre: Historical Romance; 1800’s
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Their marriage lasted only slightly longer than the honeymoon—to no one’s surprise, not even Bryony Asquith's. A man as talented, handsome, and sought after by society as Leo Marsden couldn't possibly want to spend his entire life with a woman who rebelled against propriety by becoming a doctor. Why, then, three years after their annulment and half a world away, does he track her down at her clinic in the remotest corner of India? Leo has no reason to think Bryony could ever forgive him for the way he treated her, but he won't rest until he’s delivered an urgent message from her sister—and fulfilled his duty by escorting her safely back to England. But as they risk their lives for each other on the journey home, will the biggest danger be the treacherous war around them—or their rekindling passion?

This is yet another good historical romance by Sherry Thomas. Bryony has run away from everything. Most assuredly Leo Marsden. Leo must come to deliver a message and bring her back to her sick father. Only things seem to keep getting in the way. The story is well put together. I really like that Bryony is a doctor in the late 1800’s. It makes the story quite compelling to read. The dynamic between Leo and Bryony is very entertaining. I really enjoyed reading this book.

One Night With A Prince by Sabrina Jeffries

Genre: Historical Romance; 1800’s, Royalty, Royal Brotherhood Trilogy
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Proper Lady Christabel, the Marchioness of Haversham, is desperate to regain some letters that could destroy her -- so desperate that she pretends to be the mistress of notorious gaming-club owner Gavin Byrne to accompany him to a scandalous house party where she can reclaim them. But when she agreed to let Byrne coach her on how a true mistress behaves, she never suspected how very...persuasive his wicked lessons would be. Gavin is secretly determined to find the letters himself and use them for revenge against the noble sire who abandoned him to grow up in London's worst slums. He's also delighted at how very successful his "mistress lessons" are: it won't be long before the luscious young widow is in his bed. But when Christabel catches Gavin in his own seductive net, he faces a difficult choice: to wreak the vengeance he's planned all his life, or to protect the woman he may -- to his own astonishment -- need more than revenge.

This is the third book in the Royal Brotherhood trilogy. Now we’ve seen Gavin in the first two books as the man that has been truly wronged by his Princely father. Now he is being asked to do something for him. He must get a woman who has shot at him into a house party. Christabel doesn’t know what she is really asking of Gavin. But as the two work together they both learn that no one should go by what they first see. Gavin is not the man that everyone believes him to be. The character is very deep and well written and keeps you guessing as to what he will do next. Chritabel is even harder to put into a neat little box. I enjoyed reading the final book in this trilogy. Sabrina Jeffries writing is highly entertaining and I am a little sad that the trilogy is over. But I most defiantly will be looking for other books by her.

His at Night by Sherry Thomas

Genre: Historical Romance; 1800’s
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Love is hottest in the darkness before dawn. Elissande Edgerton is a desperate woman, a virtual prisoner in the home of her tyrannical uncle. Only through marriage can she claim the freedom she craves. But how to catch the perfect man? Lord Vere is used to baiting irresistible traps. As a secret agent for the government, he’s tracked down some of the most devious criminals in London, all the while maintaining his cover as one of Society’s most harmless—and idiotic—bachelors. But nothing can prepare him for the scandal of being ensnared by Elissande. Forced into a marriage of convenience, Elissande and Vere are each about to discover that they’re not the only one with a hidden agenda. With seduction their only weapon—and a dark secret from the past endangering both their lives—can they learn to trust each other even as they surrender to a passion that won’t be denied?

Elissande just wants to get her and herself out of her uncle’s home. Lord Vere is investigating Elissande’s uncle while holding behind his idiotic guise. But then he gets snared into marring Elissande. As the story moves forward you find that there is so much more going on then what is first seen. I loved this book for that. I liked how just when you think the story is going to go one way it turns on its ear. Vere for all his intelligence is rather dumb in matters of his own heart. I can’t wait to see what is next for Sherry Thomas as I really love her writing.

Let me know what your thoughts are.

Wicked Becomes You by Meredith Duran

Genre: Historical Romance; 1800’s
Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: She’s been burned not once but twice by London’s so-called gentlemen... Gwen Maudsley is pretty enough to be popular, and plenty wealthy, too. But what she’s best known and loved for is being so very, very nice. When a cad jilts her at the altar—again—the scandal has her outraged friends calling for blood. Only Gwen has a different plan. If nice no longer works for her, then it’s time to learn to be naughty. Happily, she knows the perfect tutor—Alexander Ramsey, her late brother’s best friend and a notorious rogue. So why won’t a confirmed scoundrel let her be as bad as she wants to be? Unbeknownst to Gwen, Alex’s aloof demeanor veils his deepest unspoken desire. He has no wish to see her change, nor to tempt himself with her presence when his own secrets make any future between them impossible. But on a wild romp from Paris to the Riviera, their friendship gives way to something hotter, darker, and altogether more dangerous. With Alex’s past and Gwen’s newly unleashed wildness on a collision course, Gwen must convince Alex that his wickedest intentions are exactly what she needs.

Gwen has no family after losing her brother. Now she has been jilted not once but twice on her wedding day. Now she feels that she needs to become wicked to be able to find her happiness. Alex was her brother’s best friend and is a notorious rake. But he seems to be the only one that see Gwen. The two work together for their own purposes but their relationship is changing. This is a good tale. The characters are well written. I found the story to be a little predictable at times. And there was a subplot that I didn’t quite understand the point of. But that being said I still liked the story. Alex is the one that made it. I would like to read more by Meredith Duran to see how her stories will varies.

To Pleasure a Prince by Sabrina Jeffries

Genre: Historical Romance; Early 1800’s, Royalty, Royal Brotherhood trilogy
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Beautiful Lady Regina Tremaine has turned down so many suitors she’s called La Belle Dame Sans Merci.  The truth:  she won’t marry, because she carries a dark secret.  Still she sees no reason why her brother shouldn’t court the lovely Louisa North—even if Louisa’s half-brother, the notorious “Dragon Viscount,” objects. Marcus North, Viscount Draker—bastard son of the Prince of Wales—is rumored to be a monster who holds women captive only to have his way with them.  Exiled from polite society, he strikes a deal with Lady Regina:  her brother can court Louisa so long as Marcus can court Regina.  Can the beauty and the beast survive a proper courtship when the chemistry between them threatens to cause the scandal of the century?

This is the second book in the Royal Brotherhood trilogy. Marcus is a recluse from everyone but his family. But his sister is in need of a husband. As his deal with his half brother they will work to marry off Louisa to someone of good standing, only not someone who is connected to the Prince who is their father. Regina does not understand why the Duke won’t let her bother court his sister Louisa. So she goes for a visit that now has her agreeing to being courted as well. All this happens early on in the story. I really enjoyed reading this. As we finally get to know more about the Dragon Viscount. Regina is a very diverse character that you can’t fit into a little box. I can’t wait to read the final book in this trilogy, One Night With A Prince.

Genre: Historical Romance; 1800’s
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: He created the perfect woman… The impoverished Duke of Monchester despises the rich Americans who flock to London, seeking to buy their way into the ranks of the British peerage. So when railroad heiress Summer Wine Lee offers him a king’s ransom if he’ll teach her to become a proper lady, he’s prepared to rebuff her. But when he meets the petite beauty with the knife in her boot, it’s not her fortune he finds impossible to resist… For the arms of another man Frontier-bred Summer Wine Lee has no interest in winning over London society—it’s the New York bluebloods and her future mother-in-law she’s determined to impress. She knows the cost of smoothing her rough-and-tumble frontier edges will be high. But she never imagined it might cost her heart…

Summer comes to London to learn to be a proper lady so that she can marry into the bluebloods of New York. But she has a lot of work to do as she has grown up in the town of Tombstone. Byron hates rich Americans coming to London to marry into a title. But he himself has no money as his father depleted his holdings before his death. So they agree to work together. Only there is more going on than their lessons. This story has some great side plots that make it an even richer tale. The dialogue between the characters is wickedly sharp. I really enjoyed reading this book finding the characters believable and fun. I am truly becoming a fan of Kathryne Kennedy’s writing.

The Wolf Next Door by Lydia Dare

Genre: Historical Romance; 1800’s, Westfield Brothers
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Witches, Werewolves, Magic
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: They can’t even be in the same room together… Ever since a disastrous encounter on a full moon years ago, Prisca Hawthorne has taunted, insulted, and in every way tried to push him away. If only her heart didn’t break every time Lord William Westfield left her… But staying apart is even worse… Lord William throws himself into drinking, gambling, and debauchery and pretends not to care about Prisca at all. But when he returns to find a rival werewolf threatening her, he just about goes berserk… Can Prisca forgive the unforgivable, or are the mooncrossed lovers going to be forced into a battle of will that could be fatal…?

This is the third book in the Westfield Brothers trilogy. William, who we have seen before, has it bad for Prisca. But the two act like oil and water whenever they are they are together. Now things are put into motion that the two of them are thrown together. The story has quite a few twists to it. Prisca is just as much of a spit fire as she was in the first book. While William tries to play it cool and fails. I love this book just as much as the others. The good thing is that this may have started out as a trilogy about the three brothers but there is more to come. The Taming of the Wolf is the next book in the series and I can’t wait to read it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: The Inferno Club: In public, this scandalous society of London aristocrats is notorious for pursuing all manner of debauchery. But in private, they are warriors who would do anything to protect king and country . . . They say that the very name of Warrington is cursed . . . From a time as old as the cold stone of the duke's ancestral castle, the Warrington men have been plagued by tragedy. But Rohan Kilburn, the Duke of Warrington, has vowed to escape the predestined torment by forsaking love and devoting his life to the Inferno Club and its secret mission. And then she is brought to him unbidden by cutthroats hoping to calm the duke's infamous temper—a sacrificial virgin of sorts. But even overpowered, Kate Madsen will be no man's sacrifice. And the duke's price for claiming her may be what he has sworn never to give—the heart he has so long and fiercely guarded—to the beautiful hostage he was never meant to love.

Rohan is going to try and handle an issue that has arisen at home. When he gets there he is gifted with the beautiful Kate. Kate is scared and has no idea what or where she really is. Rohan soon learns what is going on and takes Kate under his protection. As the two work together to piece together what is underfoot they soon discover a mutual respect. I don’t want to go too much into this as I don’t want to give away what happens. Of the two books I found this to be my favorite. I love what happens. Rohan is very superstitious. While Kate is very logical and a bit of a spitfire. The whole story is brilliantly written. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, My Irresistible Earl.

And when the opportunity arises to rescue Armond from a grim fate while changing her own, Rosalind knows she must seize it... A curse unleashed. Especially when the reality of unquenchable desire—and certain danger—burn stronger than ever by the light of a full moon...

This is the first of the Wild Wulfs of London books. Rosalind just wants to be go back to the country and away from her horrid stepbrother. Armond doesn’t want to get married and has sworn that he would never do so along with the rest of his brothers. But everything changes as more females are found dead. But Armond is hiding something. This is one of the best historical paranormal romances that I have read. The characters are well written and you feel for them throughout the book. Armond is one who would rather make himself unhappy than to make others unhappy. Rosalind has to deal with her stepbrother but she is no delicate rose she does have a back bone. This is a very great book and I can’t read the next one in the series, The Untamed One.

The Mad, Bad Duke by Jennifer Ashley

Genre: Historical Romance; 1800’s, Nvengaria
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Magic, Demons, Mages
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Meagan Tavistock can easily see how Alexander earned the nickname Mad, Bad Duke. His deep blue eyes promise sinful pleasure and his rich voice intimates that as soon as they are skin to skin, he’ll fulfill desires she isn’t even aware of. When a love spell misses its intended target, Meagan can no longer resist the temptation...until the magic wears off, leaving the pair in a most compromising position. Their only option is a marriage that thrusts Meagan into a new world of high danger, dark secrets, and a passion so intense she can’t help wondering: Is it the lingering power of the spell or true love at last?

This is the second book in the Nvengaria series. It is the Meagan and Alexander’s story. Meagan goes with a friend to pick up a love spell for her friend so she can have an affair. But the spell instead brings Meagan and Alexander together. But there is more magic in play. Not including the intrigue and danger. I think I liked this book even more than the first book. There is so much going on but it flows so well together. Meagan is a great character who is strong and knows what she wants. Alexander has a few control issues as well as a secret of his own. This is one of those books that I couldn’t put down. I can’t wait to read the next book, Highlander Ever After.

I never believed the ghost existed until I saw Lucas suddenly transform into the very likeness of a gentleman – even a Lord! Is it possible, Gentle Reader, that he has been possessed by the ghost of Lord Hamilton? If so, should I have the ghost exorcised? If I do, then Lucas will return to his old life of thievery, and I will never see him again. If I don’t, his very life may be in danger! Please respond quickly, for my heart aches with the sweetest and most unladylike passion. I will manage as best I can until I receive good tidings and advice from you! Mrs. Lucas Davin (nie Miss Caroline Wainwright).

So I picked up another Historical because the back was just so intriguing. Caroline is just trying to get married, but everyone who comes around gets scared off by the ghost. Lucas has been stealing for most his life. Now the two come together Caroline hoping to keep her home and Lucas gets set for life. I loved this story. Caroline is a strong character who is driven and knows what she wants. Lucas hates the wealth of Society and just wants to makes things better for himself and his boys. It just makes him a stronger character. This is one of those great stories that you will like a lot.

In The Prince's Bed By Sabrina Jeffries

Genre: Historical Romance; Early 1800’s, Royalty, Royal Brotherhood trilogy
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Miss Katherine Merivale is desperate to make a respectable match—if only her childhood sweetheart would propose!  Until he does, she can’t touch the fortune she’s inherited.  That’s why the last thing she needs is that notorious rogue Alec Black putting her matrimonial plans at risk with his smoldering gazes and moonlit kisses. Alec, the Earl of Iversley—and one of three bastard sons of the Prince of Wales—is secretly searching for an heiress bride to pay his debts.  Fiery Katherine seems the answer to his prayers, and her passionate response to his stolen kisses and practiced seduction soon assures him that she is his.  But Katherine is looking for a love-match, and Alec can’t help but wonder what will happen when she discovers his deception?

This is the first book in Royal Brotherhood trilogy. Alec approaches his unknowing half brothers so that he can find a rich bride and save his estate. While Katherine is looking to marry her childhood friend as she would like to marry someone who is a friend rather than someone that she may have a passion that will die down. Katherine doesn’t know what to make of Alec as his reputation is one that makes him out to be a rake. I know that I have said it before that I don’t usually read historical romances. I picked this up having read a story by Sabrina Jeffries in Fantasy and really enjoying it. I wanted to read something else by her. I really think I choose well in my book. I found the characters well formed and compelling. I really liked that there was a lot more to Alec’s character. That he had this whole background about why he is the person he is. Katherine for all her prim and proper ways has a bit of a wild side to her as well. I truly enjoyed reading this book of their courtship. I actually plan on reading the next book in the trilogy, To Pleasure a Prince.
