So Still the Night by Kim Lenox

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Immortals, People with Abilities, Shadow Guard
Sub Genre: Historical Romance
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Marcus Helios was a member of the Shadow Guard until one reckless act changed it all, bringing him to the edge of madness. His hope for salvation lies in a cryptic message contained within two cryptic scrolls he believes to be in the possession of an enigmatic beauty named Mina. And Mina is not about to hand over the scrolls’ secrets to a total stranger. But someone else has designs on the mysterious relics, and on Mark: Jack the Ripper’s jilted bride. Her malevolent embrace will trap everyone within reach, and her dark plans will challenge the powers of all she is destined to destroy.

This is the second book in the Shadow Guard series. After what Marcus went through to get Jack the Ripper he is waiting to see when the orders for his death will come. But then there is hope that may be able to save him. He must learn from Mina if she has the scrolls that will help save him. Mina isn’t sure what to make of Mark even though he does intrigue her. This is a great second book as it picks up right from the last one, just changing the main characters. Giving a more dynamic richer feel to the world that is created with this story. I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read the next one, Darker Than Night.

Dragon Lovers by Jo Beverley, Mary Jo Putney, Barbara Samuel, Karen Harbaugh

Genre: Fantasy; Dragons, Shifters, Magic
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: The flames of desire can burn…Romance and fantasy collide in these enchanting stories featuring dragons-and love-in all their many forms. Four of today's most popular authors bring to life mythical creatures, otherworlds of yesterday and today, and the passionate melding of hearts. From a virgin princess's first love to a shape-changing samurai bridegroom, from a young widow and her sexy handyman's secret project to a knight and his distressed damsel, the courage, beauty, and strength of dragons inspire the most unforgettable stories ever told.

This anthology brings four stories of dragons. Each story brings its own little twist. Most of the stories are set in an older more mythical time while there is one contemporary tale. I thought that the stories where good but not as good as they could have been. It’s a great book if you need something to kill some time. The stories are slightly predictable. I don’t think I will read this book a second time.

Back Cover: The Shadow Guards – A mysterious order of immortals entrusted with the destiny of the living – have been called upon to reclaim the souls of the most wicked and depraved of earth’s mortals. Sleeping Beauty. Countess Selene is the Shadow Guard’s only female member. It has taken her centuries to prove herself worthy of the Order. She sacrificed herself to save the people of London, and she’s now under a sleeping spell in the Tower of London, guarded by Raven warriors. Dangerous Beauty. When Selene awakens on a dark street with a blade in her hand and a dead prostitute at her feet, everything changes. She loses her power and authority, and is held under surveillance by Lord Avenage, England’s Ravenmaster, a reclusive and seductive immortal warrior whose past is shrouded in secrets. But what they don’t realize is that evil is watching. Cut off from the protective ranks of their fellow Shadow Guards, Selene and Avenage find themselves face-to-face with an ancient enemy, with only each other to trust…

This is the third book in the Shadow Guard series. This is Selene and Avenage’s story. Selene has been asleep since the last book but when she wakes things don’t look good for her. Avenage has been watching Selene for years but now he thinks she may have killed one of his brothers. As the two work together they finally told each other how they feel for one another, but is that enough. This is a great addition to the series. It just builds from the last two books. I can’t wait to see where the series will go from here.

Back Cover: After defeating evil Queen Mab, Maggie Donovan has become the new Queen of the Fae royalty in Otherworld has its pros and cons. For one thing, she gets to make love to her dashing Fae Warrior, Culhane – on the throne. But she also worries that Culhane may want her more for her power than because she’s Fae-licious. And queens do tend to have enemies – especially a certain ex-queen who has not been destroyed and wants her crown back. When Maggie’s niece is kidnapped by Mab, Maggie must overcome her mistrust of Culhane and unite the Fae Warriors to save the girl and defeat the rebel queen once and for all – or else lose everything.

This is the second story in Maureen Child’s Otherworldly series. Maggie is still working on being human trying to avoid her royal duties. While her sister is sick and they aren’t sure what it is. Culhane is trying to get Maggie to be the queen he knows that she is. There is a lot to this story including the a new family member that they did not know of. I thought that this book is very entertaining. I love the dynamic the characters find themselves in. Also watching Maggie as she is trying so hard to stay human and in the mortal realm. I really enjoyed reading this book, and hope that this isn’t the end to this series.

Paranormal are out and everyone knows about them. I enjoy how the world that is created mixing the two together. It feels like it is something that is happen in the here and now, with few modifications. I love the relationship between the witch and the vampire. It makes things even more interesting. And the whole world being so close to reality. Something that I think is decent. I’m not giving it 5 stars but it is a nice little read. Seduced by Shadows by Jessa Slade

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Demons, Angels, Marked Souls
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: The war between good and evil has raged for millennia, but now evil is
winning, and The Marked Souls are caught in the middle…After an accident left her near death, Sera Littlejohn is struggling to piece her life together again.  But when a violet-eyed stranger reveals a supernatural battle veiled in the shadows, Sera is tempted to the edge of madness by a dangerous desire. Ferris Archer takes Sera under his wing now that she is talyan, possessed by a repentant demon with hellish powers.  Archer and his league of warriors have long risked their demon-shattered souls to stop darker spirits from wreaking havoc.  But they’ve never fought beside a female talya before, and never in all his centuries has Archer found a woman who captivates him like Sera. With the balance shifting between good and evil, passion and possession, Sera and Archer must defy the darkness and dare to embrace a love that will mark them forever…

This is the first book in the Marked Souls series. Archer is tracking Sera trying to see what kind of Demon that she is marked for. As they come together they learn that there is more than just gray. And that together they are even more powerful then apart. Sera is a character that doesn’t always read the situation correctly. She can also be a little too trusting. While Archer doesn’t like what is happening to him when he is around Sera. This is a nice quick read. But this book was also missing something I just don’t know what that was. I’m interested in seeing where the series will go and will read the next book, Forged of Shadows.

Dark Nights, Dark Dreams by Savannah Russe

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Psychics, Zombies, Magic, Witches, Sisterhood of the Sight
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Four extraordinary women with amazing psychic talents. A highly specialized team with one purpose: Solve crimes so terrifying they seem out of this world.  U.S. foreign agent Sam Chase has always kept her psychic abilities a secret--until now. Recruited to solve a case so macabre and chilling that it can't be rationally explained, she joins an elite unit with three other young women who rank among the top mediums in the world. But these amazing psychics are definitely no angels. One is a voodoo priestess, another is a witch, and the third has a secret, dangerous past. Like it or not, Sam is part of a new sisterhood--and she's been teamed with Lance "Bear" Rutledge, a sexy forensic investigator who thinks this supernatural stuff is all bunk. Unfortunately he's not only getting under Sam's skin, but he has also started invading her dreams--and her heart. As Sam and Bear combat their forbidden passions, they find themselves fighting for their country and their lives in a battle against the darkest evil of all . . .

Sam has been hoping to transfer to Paris but then gets recruited by the CIA, which she is not happy about. But she doesn’t mind working with Bear. Bear isn’t quite sure what to make of these women that are part of the CIA. He doesn’t quite believe some of the things that are going on in the case that they are working either. But when the two come together they can make sparks fly. I really enjoyed this story with its conspiracy theory deeply imbedded into it. I found the characters to be engaging pulling me into the story and making it a book I couldn’t put down until I finished it. I hope there will be more to the Sisterhood of the Sight and will keep an eye out for it.

Prey by Melina Morel

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Vampires, Shapeshifters, Hunters
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 2 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: The Secret. The Hunger. The Dark. It takes more than passion to bring two strangers together. An importer of Russian artifacts, Vivian Roussel prefers a low profile in order to keep her private life a secret. Vivian is a werecat, a descendant of an ancient demigoddess, and highly regarded in Manhattan’s night world. But when she’s robbed of a priceless icon, she has only one recourse for protection. A surveillance expert and Russian Blue werecat, Pavel Federov never looks at a client as anything other than a contract. Until Vivian. Drawn to her in ways that have nothing to do with business, Pavel soon discovers that whoever stole the icon has something far more dangerous in mind. He has marked Vivian as his next target – a lovely bit of prey that holds the key to one of Manhattan’s most explosive international secrets.

This is the second book in the Vivian Roussel series. So in this novel it seemed to be a little bit better in being a Paranormal Romance from the first one. But I still did not really like this story. This story took a little different turn than I was expecting. I just wish that had been better story. As I felt like there was something lacking. The next book in this series is Smolder.

Past Redemption by Savannah Russe

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Vampires; Vampire Hunters, The Darkwing Chronicles
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Scandal. Secrets. Seduction. It's all in the family. If you passed Daphne Urban on the streets of New York, you'd see a sleek young brunette dressed to kill. You'd never know she was a vampire. But the government knows. Their ultimatum: Spy for the United States, or be terminated. And after all these centuries, Daphne is not ready to call it quits . . . The word is out on Susto. It's a new recreational drug that intensities sex, it's spreading like wildfire--and it's lethal. Team Darkwing's mission: Track the drug back to its origin. Immersing themselves in New York City's nightlife, they soon discover ties between Susto's billions in revenue and the country's most powerful political dynasty. To infiltrate the family, Daphne flirts with its weakest link, handsome party boy St. Julien Fitzmaurice, whom she'd love to casually sink her teeth into. But even as their dalliance leads her deeper into the case, Daphne can't stop thinking about Darius, the darkly sexy human she claimed with a passionate bite. He's the bad boy she knows she should--she must--forget, because if she doesn't, she'll be risking not only the mission, but her own heart . . .

This is the second book in the Darkwing Chronicles. Daphne has a new assignment to find out who is behind Susto. But at the same time she is dealing with her broken heart. And it doesn’t help that Darius keeps coming around. I really like Daphne as a character as she is a lot more complex. Also the time flashes of her past where great. Darius made me angry, but then I think that is the point. I like this book and can’t wait to read Beneath the Skin.

Nothing will stop her from destroying the last Montfort werewolf – not even Ian Morgan, the two-hundred-year-old vampire whose electrifying touch could tempt Catherin to indulge in a forbidden darkness from which she may never return.

This is the first book in the Vivian Roussel series. I was sad to say left me wanting. It stated to being a Paranormal Romance. But I didn’t feel that it was really a romance novel. I thought that it is more of an Urban Fantasy. I just didn’t find the story to be compelling but I wanted to give the writer another try and will give the next book in this series, Prey a try.

Beyond the Pale by Savannah Russe

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Vampires; Vampire Hunters
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: The government knows that Daphne Urban is a vampire, and they have an ultimatum: spy for them, or be killed. The choice is easy. She can speak 13 languages, has a genius IQ, and has escaped detection for nearly five hundred years-making her perfect for Team Darkwing. Her first mission is to get close to Bonaventure, a shady arms dealer with an unexpected gift for seduction. But when Darius, a darkly sexy vampire slayer, begins chasing her, Darius is torn between desire and duty. For his lithe, young prey is also his ultimate temptation.

This is the first book in the Darkwing Chronicles. Daphne is one of those characters who are very confident in herself. She isn’t all that happy that she is forced into joining Team Darkwing. But at the same time she’s very good at what she does. Darius who is the perfect counter to her just can’t quite handle that she is a vampire. I liked the why this story is written. Lover Enshrined by J. R. Ward

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Vampires, Soulless Humans
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: In this “frighteningly addictive” paranormal romance saga, there’s a war raging between vampires and their slayers. Here are the stories of a secret band of brothers like no other – six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. And now a dutiful twin must choose between two lives… Fiercely loyal to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Phury has sacrificed himself for the good of the race, becoming the male responsible for keeping the Brotherhood’s bloodlines alive. As Primal of the Chosen, he is obligated to father the sons and daughters who will ensure that the traditions of the race survive, and that there are warriors to fight those who want all vampires extinguished. As his first mate, the Chosen Cormia wants to win not only his body but his heart for herself. She is drawn to the noble responsibility behind the emotionally scarred male. But Phury has never allowed himself to know pleasure or joy. As the war with the Lessening Society grows grim, tragedy looms over the Brotherhood’s mansion, and Phury must decide between duty and love…

In the sixth book we get to watch Phury and Cormia’s relationship. We also learn some more about the lessening society. That one of the vampires is actually the son of the Omega. As well as learn more about the boys John, Qhuinn, and Blay. I love watching them as they come into their own. The story shows us another side to Phury and it isn’t a pretty site. But it also helps to build on this great series. There were some great unexpected twists that where brilliantly written. I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next one in the series, Lover Avenged.

But now the final reckoning between the Pyr, who count humans among these treasures, and the Slayers, who would eradicate humans and the Pyr who protect them, is about to begin… When ace accountant Sara Keegan decides to settle down and run her quirky aunt’s New Age bookstore, she’s not looking for adventure. She doesn’t believe in fate or the magic of tarot cards, but when she’s saved from a vicious attack by a man who has the ability to turn into a fire-breathing dragon, she questions whether she’s losing her mind – or about to lose her heart. Self-reliant loner Quinn Tyrrell has long been distrustful of his fellow Pyr. When he feels the firestorm that signals his destined mate, he’s determined to protect and possess Sara, regardless of the cost. Then Sara’s true destiny is revealed and Quinn realizes he must risk everything – even Sara’s love – to fulfill their entwined fates.

The first in the Dragonfire series, we get to meet Quinn and Sara. Quinn feels as though he has been wronged by his fellow Pyr. He has lived alone for a long time as he doesn’t know who he can trust. Then when his firestorm starts both Pyr and Slayer come to help or to keep Sara away from him. I felt so bad for Quinn and what he has had to go though. But I was glad that Sara is now there for him and that she wants to help him. The two make a great team together. This is one of those stories that you can’t put the book down wanting to know who is the real bad guy. What is going to happen next. Beautiful story writing that really brings the world alive. Sealed With a Curse by Cecy Robson

Genre: Urban Fantasy; Magic, Vampires, Shapeshifters, Supernaturals, Witches
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other twenty-something girls—with one tiny exception: They're the products of a curse that backfired and gave each of them unique powers that make them, well, a little weird… The Wird sisters are content to avoid the local vampires, werebeasts, and witches of the Lake Tahoe region—until one of them blows up a vampire in self-defense. Everyone knows vampires aren't aggressive, and killing one is punishable by death. But soon more bloodlust-fueled attacks occur, and the community wonders if the vampires of Tahoe are plague-ridden. Celia reluctantly agrees to help Misha, the handsome leader of an infected vampire family. But Aric, the head of the werewolf pack determined to destroy Misha's family to keep the area safe, warns Celia to stay out of the fight. Caught between two hot alphas, Celia must find a way to please everyone, save everyone, and—oh, yeah—not lose her heart to the wrong guy or die a miserable death. Because now that the evil behind the plague knows who Celia is, he's coming for her and her sisters. This Wird girl has never had it so tough.

This is officially the first book in the Weird Girls series. But as I have stated before I count short stories where they should actually go in a series. In this story the sisters got to court, deal with vampires and meet a pack of wolves all very early in the book. And there is so much more. Celia is the protector of her sisters and wants to do everything to keep them safe. But she is soon pulled into helping Misha and gets between a feud with him and the alpha Aric. It's all very well written. I loved reading this book. The characters pull you in and take you along for the ride. I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series, A Cursed Embrace.

Night Falls Darkly by Kim Lenox

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Immortals, People with Abilities, Shadow Guard
Sub Genre: Historical Romance
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Ever since an accident took away her memory, Miss Elena Whitney can’t recall the secrets of her past. All she knows is that with her mysterious benefactor, Archer, Lord Black, returning to London at the behest of Queen Victoria, she should seize the chance to get some answers. But the dangerously handsome Lord Black is not exactly the man Elena imagined. Archer, a member of the immortal Shadow Guard, has been summoned to London to eliminate an exceptionally evil threat: Jack the Ripper. With his prey brutally killing London’s East End prostitutes, Archer must stop the Ripper before the murderer’s soul slips beyond his grasp, and do so while protecting his beautiful young ward, Elena, whom he spared from death two years earlier. But with a wave of panic spreading across London, Archer fears that Elena is his weakness – a distraction he can’t afford, especially since she’s likely to become the Ripper’s next target.

This is the first book in the Shadow Guard series. It is set in the time of Queen Victoria and Jack the Ripper. Elena is a nurse who hopes to one day become a doctor. She is the ward of the aloof Lord Black. Lord Archer Black is unaware that he has a ward but soon discovers this upon arriving home. The two have a very entertaining first meeting at the home. This is only the beginning of the book. It is filled with twists and a great plot. I found that the characters are brilliant. Warrior Ascended by Addison Fox

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Immortals, Gods, Abilities, Magic, The Sons of the Zodiac
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Millennia ago, the Goddess of justice created a race of fierce warriors, each imbued with a special power if the Zodiac and charged with protecting humanity from the darkest of evils. Charming, proud, and impulsive, Leo Warrior Brody Talbot is fighting what may be his final battle. Enyo, the Goddess of War, plans to fulfill an ancient prophecy to destroy humanity by harnessing the dark power of the Summoning Stones of Egypt – and there’s only one person who knows enough about the stones to help Brody diminish their strength. Since her father’s murder, museum curator Ava Harrison has continued his research of Egypt’s ancient treasures. She’s just landed the exhibit of the century: displaying the Summoning Stones at New York’s American Museum of Natural History. Used to working alone, Ava is suspicious of the arrogant archaeologist who’s been brought in to ensure the stone’s safekeeping, but his presence ignites an unexpected blaze of attraction. Never in all his centuries has Brody met a woman who enthralls him as Ava does. But, bound to protect her, he struggles to deny his passion as they are drawn into a dark and dangerous final reckoning between good and evil.

This is the first book in the Sons of the Zodiac series. Brody is on a dig in Egypt only to have to deal with fighting a Destroyer and losing a friend. He then goes to protect Ava. Ava is so wrapped up in her work that she doesn’t even notice Brody following her. This only annoys Brody. But then things change and Ava is attacked. Now they must work together to retrieve the Summoning Stones. The story is filled with adventure and danger as well as magic and romance. The whole aspect of the warriors and the zodiac is very imaginative. I love the twist on the old mixing in with the new. The strong emphasis on the zodiac was great. I really loved this book and can’t wait to read the next one in the series, Warrior Avenged.
