Radiant Shadows by Melissa Marr

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy, Faerie, Wicked Lovely
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Hunger for nourishment. Hunger for touch. Hunger to belong. Half-human and half-faery, Ani is driven by her hungers. Those same appetites also attract powerful enemies and uncertain allies, including Devlin. He was created as an assassin and is brother to the faeries' coolly logical High Queen and to her chaotic twin, the embodiment of War. Devlin wants to keep Ani safe from his sisters, knowing that if he fails, he will be the instrument of Ani's death. Ani isn't one to be guarded while others fight battles for her, though. She has the courage to protect herself and the ability to alter Devlin's plans—and his life. The two are drawn together, each with reason to fear the other and to fear for one another. But as they grow closer, a larger threat imperils the whole of Faerie. Will saving the faery realm mean losing each other?

This is the fourth book in the Wicked Lovely series. Ani is much more than she seems and very few people know. Devlin was sent to kill her years ago but had made a promise not to. Now the two are going to have to make some drastic decisions. As they work together things that they thought get turned on their head. And if they don’t hurry Faerie will be no more. Of all the books so far I have to say this is my favorite. I loved Ani she is such a great character. When we see in this book you find so much more depth. Devlin who you’re not at all sure what he is up to keeps you on your toes the whole way through the story. This is a brilliant story and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series, Darkest Mercy.

Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy, Faerie, Tales of Faery
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
Back Cover: Seth never expected he would want to settle down with anyone – but that was before Aislinn. She is everything he’d ever dreamed of, and he wants to be with her forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen. Aislinn never expected to rule very creatures who’d always terrified her – but that was before Keenan. He stole her mortality to make her a monarch, and now she faces challenges and enticements beyond any she’d ever imagined.

This is the third book in the Wicked Lovely series.
I have to say I love Melissa’s writings style. Like the other two books in her Tales of Faery, this just shows you a new side. We get to meet the fourth court, the one that actually is in Faerie. This Queen is not like any that we have seen. She is both strong and yet has a sweet side. Seth’’s decision to become a Faery wasn’t all that shocking. His love for Aislinn shows through time and again. I am interested where this is going as Keenan has just made a mess of everything with all those who at sometime loved him.
I can’t wait to read more in, Darkest Mercy.

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Vampires
Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: People pity me, but mostly they feel envy. I have all the luxury and freedom a girl my age could want. Something is happening to Charlotte Emerson. Like the fires that are ravaging the hills of Los Angeles, it consumes her from the inside out. But whether it is her eternal loneliness, the memory of her brother, the return of her first love, or the brooding, magnetic Jared – she cannot say. What if it’s something more… Something to do with the sudden tear in her perfect nails. The heat she feels when she’s with Jared. The blood rushing once again in her cheeks and throughout her veins. For Charlotte is a vampire, witness to almost a century’s worth of death and destruction. But not since she was a human girl has mortality touched her. In what way will you be transformed? Until now.

Charlotte has seen so much of the world and the changes that time has done to it. She isn’t happy with her life as she is very lonely. And never lets anyone to close to her so that she won’t hurt them. But after losing a friend she things start changing with her and she lets someone in. The story is a very nice quick read. I found that even though it is on a heavy subject it still is a little on the light side. I liked it quite a bit.

Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy, Faerie, Tales of Faery
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow. Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life. The tattoo does bring changes—not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .

Unlike Wicked Lovely this centers around a new triad of characters. We again see Leslie, Aislinn’s Friend who struggles with her feelings for Niall. I love how the two struggled over their feeling for one another. This could be considered Urban fantasy, as it takes place in current times with the Fay all around. Melissa writes about a world of many Fay courts. I found this a very enjoyable story. Wondering what the Dark King was to do as his love for Leslie grew. My heart went out to Niall as he struggled. And then having to let go of the one he loved. It’s a must read for anyone who love reading about Faeries. I can't wait to read the next book in this series, Fragile Eternity.

Darklight by Lesley Livingston

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Faeries, Magic, Changelings
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Faerie can’t lie… or can they? Much has changed since autumn, when Kelley Winslow learned she was Faerie royalty, fell in love with changeling guard Sonny Flannery, and saved New York City from a rampaging Faerie war band. When a terrifying encounter in Central Park sends Kelley tumbling into the Otherworld, her reunion with Sonny is joyful – but cut short. For they’ve been plunged into a game of Faerie deception and wavering allegiances in which the next move could topple a kingdom…or part them forever.

This is the second book in Lesley Livingston’s Faerie trilogy. It takes place almost a year after the end of the last book, Wondrous Strange. Kelley is again in another play at Central Park. But this time Sonny is still in the Otherworld. But trouble seems to follow Kelley wherever she goes and gets attacked. I don’t want to give too much away as this is a great story. I found it a little darker then the first book and can’t wait to see where the story will go from here. I would even say I liked this book more than the first one and can't wait to read the next book, Tempestuous.

Shadow of the Moon by Rachel Hawthorne

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Dark Guardian, Shapeshifters, Werewolves,
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: I can feel every Shifter's emotions except Daniel's—the only one whose heart I long to know. Hayden was born a werewolf, a Dark Guardian. But her ability to sense the feelings of fellow werewolves has made her life unbearable. She runs away, only to be tracked by charming, mysterious Daniel, a newcomer to the pack and the one Shifter immune to her powers. As she reluctantly follows him home, Hayden finds herself falling dangerously in love. . . . But even as her feelings for Daniel deepen, Hayden begins to wonder if he is who he claims to be. Where did he come from and why has no one ever seen him transform? When they stumble upon the body of a Shifter still in wolf form, her worries grow. Someone is killing her kind. Is her handsome tracker really a hunter? And is Hayden now his prey?

This is the fourth book in the Dark Guardian series. Hayden was born a werewolf but did not spend that much time with them as she can feel all the emotions of every Shifter she is near. After someone is horribly killed she runs to save anyone else from sharing her fate as the next victim. Daniel is sent to bring her home and to be her mate to help her through her change. This is a great story as you get to see a new side to Daniel who we met in the last book. Hayden is a deep character who wants to keep others just a little further away. The two characters are well paired. I really enjoyed this story and hope that we will get to meet some new characters from this world.

Invisible I by Stella Lennon

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Fiction; The Amanda Project, High School
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Amanda Valentino changed everything. Callie Leary has exactly one thing, and one thing only, in common with Nia Rivera and Hal Bennett: They were each chosen by Amanda to be her guide. When Amanda arrived at Endeavor High, she told Callie she moves around a lot and always picks one person to help her navigate the choppy waters of a new school. Why did Amanda lie? Following a course that they suspect Amanda deliberately plotted, Callie, Nia, and Hal piece together some cryptic clues. But they find more questions than answers and quickly realize that before they can figure out what happened to Amanda—the girl who changed their lives—they'll need to solve the most important mystery of all: Who is Amanda Valentino?

This is the first book in the Amanda Project. It starts off with three kids who go to school together but aren’t actually friends being called into the vice principal’s office. They soon learn that they have more in common than they ever realized. Now they are all trying to get in touch with Amanda, who has just disappeared. The story is told from Callie’s perspective. This is one of those interactive stories that you can join in on after finishing the book by going online. There is a lot to it but it just makes for a richer story. As Callie, Nia and Hal put the pieces together they realize they have no idea who Amanda really is. I really liked this story and look forward to reading the next book, Revealed.

Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Faeries, Changelings, Magic, Wondrous Strange
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Since the dawn of time, the Faerie have taken… Seventeen-year-old actress Kelly Winslow always thought faeries were just something from childhood stories. Then she meets Sonny Flannery. He’s a changeling – a mortal taken as an infant and raised among Faerie – and within short order he’s turned Kelley’s heart inside out and her life upside down. For Kelley’s beloved Central Park isn’t just a park – it’s a gateway between her ordinary city and the Faerie’s dangerous, bewitching Otherworld. Now Kelley’s eyes are opening not just to the Faerie that surround her, but to the heritage that awaits her… a destiny both wondrous and strange.

This is the first book in the Wondrous Strange trilogy and is a great new take on a story about the Fae. It asks a lot of what ifs. Kelley is more then what she knows. And Sonny soon figures that out. He is drawn to her at first without understanding why. While she is finding out who and what she is she is falling for Sonny. This is such a beautiful telling that shows a great imagination. We get to meet the original Puck from William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night's Dream. And learn more about the other Fae courts. I truly liked this book and can’t wait to read the next on Darklight.

Dark of the Moon by Rachel Hawthorne

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Werewolves, Dark Guardian
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: I’ve loved him forever, but he can never be mine. Brittany is determined to prove herself to the Dark Guardians. And yet she’s been keeping a devastating secret: She hasn’t experienced any of the intense, early signs of change that mark a Dark Guardian’s transformation. The only intense feelings she has are for Conner – and she’s kept that a secret, too. But she knows she’ll never truly have Connor’s lover if she’s not a Shifter like him. At the first full moon after her birthday, her greatest fear is realized: She doesn’t transform. Brittany is so desperate to become a wolf that she’ll go to extremes she never thought possible… and put all the Dark Guardians in incredible danger.

This is the third book in the Dark Guardian series and it was a great twist. I found that Brittany was an amazingly strong character. Even though she isn’t a Shifter she still has many other abilities that she as developed. I love how Connor is dealing with his own realizations, not only about his feelings but also about Brittany. I really couldn’t get enough of this. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, Shadow of the Moon.

Full Moon: A Dark Guardian Novel by Rachel Hawthorne

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Werewolves
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: I may be promised to another . . . but thoughts of Rafe consume me. I don't know how much longer I can resist. Lindsey is wild and reckless, a natural rebel—maybe because her entire life was laid out for her even before she was born. Her parents are among the most powerful members of the Dark Guardians, an ancient tribe of werewolves, and they arranged Lindsey's betrothal to Connor long ago. The next full moon is coming all too soon, and then her commitment to Connor will be final—no turning back. She should be happy . . . so why can't she stop thinking about gorgeous, brooding Rafe? When a dangerous threat on the pack escalates, so do tensions between Connor and Rafe. A fight over Lindsey is imminent, but will it be to the death?

This is the second book in Rachel Hawthorne’s Dark Guardian novels. It starts only a little after the first book. Lindsey being the main character, and her dealing with her heart as it swings between Rafe and Connor. I love Rachel’s writing style of bringing the werewolves alive. You could almost feel the torment of what Lindsey was going through trying to figure out who she really loved. And what it would mean if she chooses incorrectly. Beautiful story one that I know I will read many times over. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, Dark of the Moon.

Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Fantasy; Magic, Retelling of Beauty and the Beast
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: A strange imprisonment. Beauty has never liked her nickname. She is thin and awkward; it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones. But what she lacks in looks, she can perhaps make up for in courage. When her father comes home with the tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must go to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Her father protests that he will not let her go, but she answers, "Cannot a Beast be tamed?"

As I have stated before I love fairy tales. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorites. The world that this story takes place is older and very picturesque. I love that books are a major factor in Beauty getting closer to the Beast. There are no horrible family members in this story. All the backend characters are well developed as well. But the writing in this is amazing. I have given this book as a gift many times over. I even went so far as to order a hard covered version for myself as my original copy fell apart. A book you will read over and over again.

Spells by Aprilynne Pike

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Fairy, Magic, Trolls
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Although Laurel has come to accept her true identity as a faerie, she refuses to turn her back on her human life—and especially her boyfriend, David—to return to the faerie world. But when she is summoned to Avalon, Laurel's feelings for the charismatic faerie sentry Tamani are undeniable. She is forced to make a choice—a choice that could break her heart.

This is the second book in Aprilynne’s brilliant Wings series. Six months have gone by and now Laurel is back to go to Avalon over the summer. She is having to handle her feelings for Tam and relearn everything that she doesn’t remember. But she has to deal with the bad guys coming after her. While trying to reassure David that she just wants to be with him. The way this story starts with its flows from the first book to this one is great. I really don’t want to give away too much of this story as you have to read it. I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next book, Illusions.

This is the third book in the Evernight Academy. In this Bianca and Lucas are trying to keep everything about what Bianca is from the Black Cross. Ascendant by Diana Peterfreund

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy; Magic, Unicorns, People with Abilities
Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: The hunt continues…Astrid Llewelyn is now a fully-trained unicorn hunter, but she’s learning she can’t solve all her problems with just a bow and arrow. Her boyfriend Giovanni has decided to leave Rome, the Cloisters is in dire financial straits, her best friend’s powers seem to be mysteriously disintegrating, and Astrid fears that school, home, and her hopes of becoming a scientist are nothing but impossible dreams. So when she’s given the opportunity to leave the Cloisters and put her skills to use as part of a scientific quest to discover The Remedy, Astrid leaps at the chance. Finally, she can have exactly what she wants. . . or can she? At the Gordian Pharmaceuticals headquarters deep in the French countryside, Astrid begins to question everything she thought she believed: her love for Giovanni, her loyalty to the Cloisters, and – most of all – her duty as a hunter. Should Astrid be saving the world from killer unicorns, or saving the unicorns from the world?

This is the second book in the killer unicorns series. Astrid is not sure she wants to still hunt. Yes she is good at it but it doesn’t mean that she likes it. Her mother is going on TV talking about unicorn hunting. While things just seem to be going awry. I don’t want to get into this story as I don’t want to give too much away. I have to say that I thought that this story was a little bit of a downer. It’s not that it’s a bad story actually it was very well written. But it is a literal a downer as a lot of sad things happen. I do like how this added to the story and hope that at some point there will be more to this series.

Rampant by Diana Peterfreund

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy; Magic, Unicorns, People with Abilities, Killer Unicorns
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Forget everything you ever knew about unicorns… Real unicorns are venomous, man-eating monsters with huge fangs and razor-sharp horns. Fortunately, they’ve been extinct for a hundred and fifty years. Or not. Astrid had always scoffed at her eccentric mother’s stories about killer unicorns. But when one of the monsters attacks her boyfriend – thereby ruining any chance of him taking her to the prom – Astrid finds herself headed to Rome to train as a unicorn hunter at the ancient cloisters the hunters have used for centuries. However, at the cloisters all is not what it seems. Outside, the unicorns wait to attack. And within, Astrid faces other, unexpected threats: from the crumbling, bone-covered walls that vibrate with a terrible power to the hidden agendas of her fellow hunters to – perhaps most dangerously of all her growing attraction to a handsome art student… an attraction that could jeopardize everything.

Ok how can you go wrong with a new take on unicorns. Especially when it turns them into “venomous, man-eating monsters with huge fangs and a razor-sharp horn!!!!” When I first came across this I thought of the killer rabbits in Monty Python’s Holy Grail. But I’m getting off topic, this story is taking place in current times. We learn a lot about the history or unicorn hunters and their abilities. Astrid never wanted to be a hunter she only wanted to help people. To one day even become a doctor. But her mother has other plans for her. After going to Rome she learns a lot about what she is capable of, as well as her own family history. The other girls are very different in why they are hunting. As time goes on they all become stronger. The imagery that is used wraps you up in how Astrid feels, as you follow her through her decisions. She is a great role model for girls. As she is strong willed and has as true sense of honor. You understand the why behind all her decisions. I love her relationship with her cousin, Phil. They make a great team. I really enjoyed it and hope that there will be another story where we see what happens to the characters later on.

Stargazer by Claudia Gray

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Vampires, Ghosts, Wraiths, Vampire Hunters
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: The vampire in me was closer to the surface…Evernight Academy: an exclusive boarding school for the most beautiful, dangerous students of all – vampires, Bianca, born to two vampires, has always been told her destiny is to become one of them. But Bianca fell in love with Lucas – a vampire hunter sworn to destroy her kind. They were torn apart when his true identity was revealed, forcing him to flee the school. Although they may be separated, Bianca and Lucas will not give each other up. She will risk anything for the chance to see him again, even if it means coming face-to-face with the vampire hunters of Black Cross – or deceiving the powerful vampires of Evernight. Bianca’s secrets will force her to live a life of lies. Yet Bianca isn’t the only one keeping secrets. When Evernight is attacked by an evil force that seems to target her, she discovers the truth she thought she knew is only the beginning…

This is the second book in the Evernight series. As another year starts at Evernight there is more mystery as again there are things the characters are hiding from one another. Bianca is still seeing Lucas although infrequently. While everyone else believes that she and Balthazar are a couple. Which I found to be a little weird as Balthazar seemed to be in love with Bianca, but that whole side of the story was a little weird. Claudia again through in a little spin with adding the wraiths. I thought that this was a great twist on the vampire legend. I couldn’t put this down from the moment I started reading it. I love new and innovative takes on stories. I can't wait to read the next book in this series, Hourglass.

Evernight by Claudia Gray

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Vampires, Ghosts, Wraiths, Vampire Hunters
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Bianca wants to escape. At the eerily Gothic Evernight Academy, the other students are sleek, smart, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn’t fit in. When she meets handsome, brooding Lucas, he warns her to be careful – even when it comes to caring about him. But the connection between them can’t be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart…and to make Bianca question everything she’s ever believed.

This is the first book in the Evernight series. Bianca is the new girl at Evernight Academy. All she just wants to run the other way. And Lucas seems to totally understand her. I have to hand it to Claudia Gray, this is the first story in a very long time that totally blew me away. I had no idea where the story was going and then you find out the truth. Bianca is one of those characters that wants to stay out of the light. I would almost say that she is mousy, as she feels so inferior to everyone around her. Then you have Lucas who runs hot and cold all the time and you are trying to understand what his deal is. I enjoyed their love story, very Romeo & Juliet. I can't wait to read the next book in this series, Stargazer.

Never Cry Werewolf by Heather Davis

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Werewolves
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Moonlight can totally change your life. And it all starts so simply. You. Him. The moon. You’re toast. Okay, so maybe Shelby has made a few mistakes with boys lately ( how was she supposed to know Wes had “borrowed” that Porsche?). But her stepmother totally overreacts when she catches Shelby in a post-curfew kiss with a hot senior. Suddenly Shelby’s summer plans are on the shelf, and she’s being packed off to brat camp. It’s good-bye, prom dress; hello, hiking boots. Things start looking up, though, when Shelby meets fellow camper (and son of a rock star) Austin Bridges III. But soon she realizes there’s more to Austin than crush material – his family has a dark secret, and he wants Shelby’s help guarding it. Shelby knows that she really shouldn’t be getting tangled up with another bad boy…but who is she to turn her back on a guy in need, especially such a good-looking one? One thing’s for sure” that pesky full moon is about to get her into trouble all over again.

So this is a great take on starting a paranormal story. The main character Shelby gets sent off to brat camp. While there she learns about herself and her fellow campers. Austin is your dark mysterious hero, but in this he also needs to be saved. Shelby tends to be in the wrong place at the wrong time a lot. But she does seem to have the best of intentions. The only thing I didn’t like about this was how short the story was. I thought this was a very inventive take on werewolves and it has a sequel, Sometimes by Moonlight.

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Urban Fantasy, Faerie, Tales of Faery
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries. Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries. Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention. Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty—especially if they learn of her Sight—and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens. Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer. But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost—regardless of her plans or desires. Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything. Faerie intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning 21st century faery tale.

This is a great new Faery Tale. Keenan is reminded me of a very young Puck, while Aislinn is a very strong willed girl. She knows what she wants and isn’t bothered with asking for it. There are many things about this story that draw you in. It is a well thought out world and all the characters are fully formed. This Faery court is very different than the others that I have read. The new Summer King being a child from the last Summer King and current Winter Queen, was a great twist. I truly enjoyed reading this. Melissa Marr is one of those great writers that you just want to read over and over again. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, Ink Exchange.

Wings by Aprilynne Pike

Genre: Young Adult
Sub Genre: Paranormal Romance; Fairy, Magic, Trolls, Laurel Series
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful – too beautiful for words. Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked like wings. In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

This story was a brand new take on Faeries. Laurel has always had cretin quarks, eating only vegetables and fruits for one. All her life she has lived on her parents land and been home schooled. Now her parents have moved her to a new town and are sending her to public school. She at first doesn’t like any of it. But who can blame her no one wants to be the new kid. As time goes on she begins to make friends and having a good time. She and David get closer as Laurel learns more about herself. And when she meets Tamani she finally begins to understand how different she really is. I really loved this story as I have always enjoyed reading anything on Faeries. And this is a whole new take on them. The story is filled with a lot going on that makes it a good page turner. I loved this book and I can't wait to read the next book, Spells.
