Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Genre: Paranormal Romance; Space, The League
Sub Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: In the Ichidian Universe, The League and their ruthless assassins rule all. Expertly trained and highly valued, the League Assassins are the backbone of the government. But not even the League is immune to corruption . . . He was born and trained to kill. Command Assassin Nykyrian Quikiades once turned his back on the League — and has been hunted by them ever since. Though many have tried, none can kill him or stop him from completing his current mission: to protect Kiara Zamir, a woman whose father’s political alliance has made her a target.  She must accept his protection or die. As her world becomes even deadlier, Kiara must entrust her life to the same kind of beast who once killed her mother and left her for dead. Old enemies and new threaten them both and the only way they can survive is to overcome their suspicions and learn to trust in the very ones who threaten them the most: each other.

This is the first book in the League series. The story takes us out into space. Nykerian is one of the most notorious assassins who has done his job brilliantly but at one point realizes that he just can’t kill this one assignment. Because of that he signs his own death warrant. Kiara has assassins after her so her father hires Nykerian and his friends to protect her. She just doesn’t know what to make of any of them. This is a great divergence from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter. In reading her author’s notes these characters where her childhood friends. They characters are so well developed. You can’t help but fall in love with these felons. I truly loved this book and can’t wait to read the next book in this series, Born of Fire.

Imzadi (Star Trek: The Next Generation) by Peter David

Genre: Science Fiction; Star Trek, Space
Sub Genre: Romance
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Back Cover: Years before they served together on board the U.S.S. Enterprise, Commander William Riker and ship's counselor Deanna Troi had a tempestuous love affair on her home planet of Betazed. Now, their passions have cooled and they serve together as friends. Yet the memories of that time linger and Riker and Troi remain Imzadi - a powerful Betazoid term that describes the enduring bond they still share. During delicate negotiations with an aggressive race called the Sindareen Deanna Troi mysteriously falls ill and dies. But her death is only the beginning of the adventure for Commander Riker, an adventure that will take him across time, pit him against one of his closest friends, and force him to choose between Starfleet's strictest rule and the one he calls Imzadi.

This is a Star Trek: The Next Generation novel. The story takes us through Deanna and Will’s relationship from the begin. But it doesn’t go the way you would think. Now if you are a Star Trek fan you will know a lot more about these characters. And this book was written before the movie in which they had gotten married in takes place. So there may be some differences. But the story is solid and well written. I’m not that big on reading these books but a friend told I had to at least read this one. I have to say I’m very glad that I did. I really enjoyed the twist on the characters. Even with the differences it made for a great read.
